The Bishnoism
The Bishnois, a Vaishnavite sect, living in western Rajasthan on the fringe of the Thar desert, have for centuries, been conserving the flora and fauna to the extent of sacrificing their lives to protect the environment. For these nature-loving people, protection of the environment, wildlife, and plants is a part and parcel of their sacred traditions. The basic philosophy of this religion is that all living things have a right to survive and share all resources.
In the fifteenth century, Jambhoji, a resident of a village near Jodhpur, had a vision that the cause of the drought that had hit the area and hardship that followed was caused by people’s interference with nature. Thereafter, he became a sanyasi or a holy man and came to be known as Swami Jambeshwar Maharaj. This was the beginning of the Bishnoi sect. He laid down 29 tenets for his followers which included a ban on killing animals, a ban to the felling of trees – especially the khejri – which grows extensively in these areas, and using material other than wood for cremations. Nature protection was given foremost importance in these tenets. Since then, the sect has religiously followed these tenets.
There are many stories about how the Bishnois have beaten up hunters and poachers for intruding in their area. The sacrifice made by Amrita Devi and over 350 others is a heart-rending example of their devotion. The Maharaja of Jodhpur wanted to build a new palace and required wood for it. To procure this his men went to the area around the village of Jalnadi to fell the trees. When Amrita Devi saw this she rushed out to prevent the men and hugged the first tree, but the axe fell on her and she died on the spot. Before dying she uttered the now famous couplet of the Bishnois, ‘A chopped head is cheaper than a felled tree’. People from 83 surrounding villages rushed to prevent the men from felling the trees and by the end of the day more than 350 had lost their lives.
When the king heard about this, he was filled with remorse and came to the village to personally apologize to the people. He promised them that they would never again be asked to provide timber to the ruler, no khejri tree would ever be cut, and hunting would be banned near the Bishnoi villages. The village of Jalnadi thus came to be called Khejarli.
The Bishnois will go to any extent to protect the wildlife and the forests around them.Recently this sect was in the news due to the activities of some Mumbai film group that had gone on a hunting spree in their area targeting the black buck. The Bishnois, in keeping to their tradition, prevented them from doing so and lodged a complaint against two of them in the local police station.
The heartland of the Bishnois in the forests near Jodhpur is abundant in trees and wildlife. The landscape around here is greener than elsewhere and the animals mainly antelopes, particularly the blackbuck and the chinkara, in these forests are not afraid of humans and are often seen near the villages eating out of the villagers’ hands. The Bishnois have indeed proved that human lives are a small price to pay to protect the wildlife and the forests around them.
Though they are staunch Hindus they often do not cremate their dead but bury them, as they are not permitted to use wood for the cremation.
There is a saying that goes "Sir santhe rooke rahe to bhi sasto jaan" this means that if a tree is saved from felling at the cost of one’s head, it should be considered as a good deed. It is for this environmental awareness and commitment that the Bishnois stand apart from other sects and communities in India.

It is a large area under direct protection of the Bishnois (The furious conservators I must admit). The diversity of both flora and fauna is immense due to natural food chains culminating into well balanced food web. The geography of the area provides habitat to a variety of animals and plants, some of rare status also. It is infact an undistrubed area by more than five centuries.

The Thar desert in India is full of ironies—one of them being the Bishnoi community of Rajasthan. Here, peace is maintained with aggression and robust health rubs shoulders with regular famine. Here penniless women flaunt heavy gold jewelery and wild animals leave the supposed security of jungles to stroll around village huts and farmlands.
Not to mention the fact that the Bishnois worship nature in all its manifestations.Not the ripe, yielding nature of ancient pagan societies, butthe ruthless and demanding desert where a desolate horizon meets a blazing sky. Here, women suckle motherless deer, die to save trees, go hungry to provide food for animals and live a strictly sattvic (simple) life advocated by their guru Jambaji.
Jambaji, or Jambeshwar Bhagavan, born in 1451 in one of the warrior sects of Rajasthan, was soon disillusioned by communal riots between Muslim invaders and the native Hindus. However, instead of wallowing in despair, he went ahead to form a religion of peace based on 29 (bish: twenty, noi: nine) principles that included compassion for all livingbeings, cleanliness, devotion, vegetarian diet and truthfulness. Thus, the Bishnois came into being.
“It was actually a clever ploy,” says Maharaja Swaroop Singh, vice-president of the Heritage Hotels, India, and former MLA of the Looni (Bishnoi) constituency in Rajasthan (where the Bishnoi population is concentrated). He has worked closely with the tribe for the last 36 years.
“Jambaji knew that to form a successful religion, he had to put in both Hindu and Muslim elements. So he asked the Bishnois to worship Vishnu and bury their dead. The idea, of course, is to give the dead back to the elements. We Hindus use the fire element, the Muslims use the earth element.”
The Bishnois, however, have a different explanation. Says Dev Ram of Guda, one of the largest Bishnoi villages in Jodhpur district, Rajasthan:”Cremating the dead requires wood. But Jambaji said that killing a live tree to get rid of a dead body is ridiculous.” So the Bishnois bury their dead without so much as a memorial.”We let the earth take back what it gave to us,” adds Dev Ram. What surprises you as you approach a Bishnoi village is the sheer freedom with which spotted deer, blue bulls, and black bucks race along the roadside or frolic in the open fields. Infact, during our approximately 50 minutes drive from Jodhpur to Guda, we must have seen hundreds of deer and antelopes, some actually crossingthe road ahead of us.
“Animals are sacred,” says Bana Ram of Guda. “Before he passed away, Jambaji told us that in his absence, the black buck should be revered as his manifestation. That belief continues. Hunting black buck for us is like killing our guru. One call of ‘Shikar! (the hunt)’ and 500 villagers will assemble here this moment to teach the offenders a lesson. We’ll kill our own children before we let these animals be killed.”
Which is why the worst thing to happen to a hunter is being caught bythe Bishnois. “Once, an Indian Air Force captain was caught hunting. We stripped him and forced him to liedown on the hot sand in the middle of summer. He’d never dream of hunting again,” adds Bana Ram.
This ruthless protection of animals is part of the Bishnoi culture. An extremely aggressive race, they fight for wildlife and environment with a vengeance. In fact, we were warned against going to the villages by the Deputy Conservator of Forests, Wildlife Division, M.L. Sonal. “The contribution of Bishnois to wildlife protection is almost 100 per cent. Butthey can be dangerous if angered,” says he.
But our reception in the Bishnoi villages, though initially suspicious, was soon friendly and warm. “You must tell others how fragile these animals are,” said a village elder, holding the picture of a black buck.”They are so delicate that most often they die of fright. We try our best to save these gentle creatures but what can we do against so many hunters? They are lured by the people of Jodhpur who don’t hesitate to get these animals killed for easy money.”
As we take a tour around the village, we come across giggling women in colorful clothes, sturdy men in their traditional white dhoti-kurtas zooming around on their motorbikes,sparkling clean mud houses and an occasional carpenter carving wood with intense concentration. “Most of us here are either farmers or wood/stone carvers, goldsmiths and milkmen,” says Maunlal Suta, a carpenter from Guda. “This art runs inthe family. We have been carving wood for generations. Now I’m training my son to do the same.”
Wood carving? But isn’t it against Jambaji’s 29 principles to cut trees?
“We never cut trees,” explains Suta.”We wait till a tree dies on its own or falls down during a storm. This work that you see here,” he points at a pile of carved wood for doors, windows and bedposts, “has been done over many years, waiting patiently for wood.”
Patience, actually, is the catchword inthis simple and dedicated community. “We have only four months of farming,” says Johra Ram, community head of a Bishnoi village.”The rest of the year we just sit around and hope the food will last.” To add to that, herds of deer end up eating much of the standing crop.”Earlier, almost 30 to 50 per cent of the crop was destroyed by animals. Now it has decreased to about 15 percent,” informs H.L. Meena, Conservator Forest, Jodhpur.
But not a stick is raised to chase away the animals. “We would willingly go hungry to feed the animals,” says Bana Ram. “We believein the co-existence of life. Our guru said that those who die saving innocent animals or trees will go to heaven. For us, animals are the avatars of divinity.” Which is why, in the water-starved desert, each Bishnoi family creates a tank in their field to provide water for deer in the arid summer months.
Much of the lifestyle of the community has its basis in the 29 principles of Jambaji. “Our guru forbade us to get addicted, be it smoking, tobacco chewing, drugs or alcohol. Even tea is considered a vice,”says Teja Ram. “He also asked us to consume plenty of milk and milk products and home grown cereals. We never eat outside. Even when going on long trips, we either cook orpack food from home.”
Tribal Faith Which explains the robusthealth of this community in spite of recurring famines. Here, though women are traditionally limited to household chores, they play a dominant role. “Women are the symbol of creation. Which is why guruji asked them to wear vibrant colors such as red and orange,” explains Bhanu Ram. “Men wear white because it is symbolic of cleanliness and austerity.”
Bishnois also have a strange interconnectionbetween death and festivity. Whenever the head of a family dies, all unmarried girls, irrespective of their age, are married off on the 12th day. “On the face of it,” says Teja Ram, “guruji started thiscustom to limit expenses during weddings. But it also has deeper implications. For us, death is a way oflife. One person dies, the next generation takes his place and the cycle continues. We believe that whatever you do in this life, you pay for it in the next birth.” The marriage of minors, however, as Teja Ram is quick to point out, “is not practiced anymore since we understand that it is detrimental to their development”.
Living amidst the barren wastelands interspersed with khejri and babool trees, the Bishnois are a proud race.”We don’t get any help from the government and don’t want any,” says Johra Ram. “Any change in the world has to begin within the society. All this talk about nature and wildlife protection would be more effective if each individual was to believe in the earth as a living, breathing entity and fight for its survival the way we do.” He narrates the story of Amrita Devi, a Bishnoi woman who, along with more than 366 other Bishnois, died saving trees.”About 200 years back, Maharaja Abhay Singh of Jodhpur required wood for his palace. So he sent his soldiers to cut trees. Amrita Devi and other villagers hugged the branches while the soldiers chopped them down with the trees. This is still remembered as the great Khejarli sacrifice.”
Such stories abound in the Bishnoi community. In fact, the Bishnoi pantheon has more martyrs who died for the sake of nature than gods.And the trend shows no signs of diminishing with time. “What makes me proud,” says Bana Ram, “is that the next generation is even more committed to nature than we are.” As if on cue, a little boy who can hardly keep pace as we walk around the village, tugs at my sleeve and says: “I’ll never let anybody kill these animals.”
Strange dedication, this. A small community spread over the northwestern states of India, including Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh besides Rajasthan, the Bishnois have contributed more to nature and wildlife protection than the entire country put together. They have learnt, with time and hardships, how to nurture nature and grow with it instead of exploiting it.

During the medieval period many religious sects became popular which vehemently advocated conservation of the natural environment. One such sect was that of the Bishnois, which became widely accepted in a climatically hostile zone of Rajasthan. The followers of the sect advocated the banning of treefelling since they believed that trees are the basis of a harmonious and prosperous environment. The love for trees was so greatly infused in the minds and souls of the Bishnois that in Khejrali village of Rajasthan about 363 young and old men and women embraced the khejri trees (Prosopis cineraria) to protect them from being felled by the king’s men. The local ruler had ordered the cutting of khejri trees to use them for his lime kilns as fuel; the Bishnois hugged them and many were killed in the episode. Later, a temple was built in honour of the Bishnoi martyrs. One of the leading women of the movement was Amrita Devi Bishnoi. The repentant king later issued an edict protecting trees and animals in Bishnoi-controlled lands. 

The commoners from a semi-arid zone had understood the real value of trees. Khejri leaves constitute an important feed for livestock in a desert region like western Rajasthan, as they have high nutritional value for camels, cattle, sheep and goat. A unique feature of this tree is that it yields much green foliage even during dry winter months when no other green fodder is available in the dry tracts. People from semi-arid parts of western Rajasthan encouraged the growth of the khejri tree in between the cultivable lands and pastures because its extensive root system helped stabilize the shifting sand dunes. It also fixes nitrogen through bacterial activity. Besides, villagers used khejri leaves as organic matter for rejuvenating non-fertile soil. Women use its flowers mixed with sugar during their pregnancy as a safeguard against miscarriage, and its bark is effective against dysentery, asthma, common cold and rheumatic arthritis.

When Shri Jumbheshwar Bhagwan were 7 years old, he started taking cows for grazing to the nearby forests. He utilized his seclusion as a cowherd for observing people, plants and trees, forests and animals. It was during this period that he understood the quality of life in the arid conditions of the Thar Desert.

Chet Sudi Navami, Vikram Samwat 1540: Father Lohat Ji Expired. Five months after mother Hansa also expired.In the age of 34 years, he left home and went to Samarathal Dhora.Established BISHNOI religion on Kartik Vadi 8, Vikram Samwat 1542. He left this world on Migsar Vadi Navami, Vikram Samwat 1593 at “Lalasar ki Sathari”.

He cleverly packaged a set of 29 rules (This is how BISHNOI name came inplace as ‘BIS’ is twenty and ‘NOI’ stands for nine) by which his followers must live. He was born in a Rajput clan, given to warring and conquests. He saw poverty and social discord. Convinced that man can succeed only by taking care of nature, and not by coveting the fruits of another man's labours. Visited across country for 51 years and shown lots of miracles to Kings, Rich & Poors etc. At times, he astounded people around him with words of knowledge and wisdom. Shri Guru Jumbheshwar Bhagwan walked the barren wilds of Rajasthan, showing how man can live in peace even in those lands, provided he cared. He was a great saint and philosopher of medieval India. He raised his voice against the rituals and formalities of Hinduism. Born in a well-to-do Rajput family in 1508 in Pipasar village of Nagaur district, Jambhoji was the only child of his parents. As a child, he was so quiet that his fellow villagers thought him to be dumb. When he was 18 years old, he met another famous saint - Gorakhnathji. It is believed that Gorakhnath Ji influenced the thoughts of Jambho Ji considerably. After the death of his parents, he renounced his entire property and shifted to Samrathal sand dunes. This is the place that saw the birth of Bishnoi sect. He imparted knowledge to his followers and propagated his faith. He was against all social and religious barriers. His close study of desert had made him realize the important role played by trees and other forms of vegetation.

Some of principles to live by, totaling 29 in all, by Shri Guru Jumbheshwar Bhagwan are as follows:

=>Never cut a green tree, but wait for a tree to age and die and then use it as timber.
=>Bury your dead simply, so that the earth assimilates the flesh - and you save too, the wood needed for a casket or a cremation.
=>Practice cleanliness and a high level of hygiene, for these will guard you from disease.
=>Protect wildlife - they too play a role in maintaining soil fertility and in holding the balance of harmful and beneficial life forms.
=>Conserve water for use by man and animals, by building tanks everywhere.
=>Practice vegetarianism and be addicted to nothing - alcohol, tobacco or even tea!
=>Do not expect or seek, alms or subsidy, from king or government; believe in self-help!
=>Let women, those founts of life, wear bright clothes of red or orange and the men white, as a symbol of undiluted devotion to the faith.
=>If ever you must choose to be violent, may it be in defense of a tree, an animal or your convictions; for this, even embrace death with cheer.

Lifestyle of Bishnoism

The lifestyle of Bishnois:

The Bishnois are presently spread over the western parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh. They are teetotalers and normally they wear a white shirt, dhoti and turban. This dress pattern is ideal for the hot dry desert climate. They pay special attention to cleanliness in their houses. Only one crop of pearl millet (bajra) is grown during the monsoon season. The bushes, which grow in the fields, protect the loose sand from wind erosion and provide the much-needed fodder for animals during a famine. Bisnois often live in little hamlets called Dhannis, with just a few round huts with intricate thatched roofs. The mud floors are plastered with cow dung to keep vermin away. The interiors are airy and clean. There is a granary to guard their rations and a sump for stored water. Bishnois in Haryana and Punjab are much wealthier then other castes....................

The actress is all set to play a Bishnoi woman in her upcoming movie.

Actress Gracy Singh has stepped in to play the Bishnoi woman, in a period drama titled ‘Saako-363 Amrita Ki Khejadi’. The movie is about a firebrand environmentalist woman who fought to save flora and fauna in her village.
She the character owing to her ethnic look and plays the protagonist in the film. “Yes, shooting in Jaipur [Barmer] is indeed making me feel great. Firstly, because I get to learn the mannerisms of the woman belonging to the Bhishnoi community. They have a typical way of wearing ‘kajal’ in their eyes which separates them from the rest of the Indians. The jewellery they wear is also very well fashioned and attractive. Also their attire is colorful and makes me look lovely,” says Gracy.
“I took up the character merely because I am very interested in the well being of woman and the cause which is being promoted through this film. I am also associated with an NGO in Mumbai where I keep fulfilling the desire of doing things for socially deprived woman. I always get attracted to simple roles and interesting stories. I am happy that even today I am appreciated and known for the role I performed in ‘Lagaan’,” shares the heroine who would love to once again work with Aamir Khan.
Talking about how she loves to do cinema with a difference, she shares, “I also love to do revolutionary kind of drama. I have also worked to promote greenery. It is my dream to do so much good for my country and its people. I respect the living of people in a natural environment; they should not be deprived of the nature bestowed upon them by almighty God.”
Talking about wanting to direct films in future, she shares, “I would love to direct films in future; I have nurtured this creativity for years now. I have not worked under any director but having worked in films has taught me the nuances of film making. I love to be spontaneous. There are no techniques of directing. Every maker has his own creative style.”
Sharing what topics fascinate her, she shares, “If at all I make a film, my subject will be based on modern Mahabharata. I feel every single person has his own fight. My Mahabharata will not highlight the fight of the Kauravas and Pandavas. It will be something which every man can associate with.”
Talking about how each moment in cinema is a learning experience, she shares, “I always feel like an upcoming artist. There is so much to learn from filmmaking. I am proud to be associated with Indian Cinema. The Indian culture, emotions and the society has so much to tell. Every minute is a learning process for me, especially while I am shooting, be it in front of the camera or behind it.”
“Here in Jaipur, I am enjoying the weather, it is cloudy but no rains. The feel is so romantic. Also I am enjoying the delicious dishes made here like ‘Daal Batti’, ‘Surmasa’ and the ‘Mattharies’,” says the heroine who wants to make a difference.
The film stars Raghubir Yadav and Vishwajeet Yadav, Raj Premi, Gracy and is being directed and written by Kalyan Seervi under Shri Maruddhara Films Pvt. Ltd.
